Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 tutoring

Grade 10 is the year math stops being a series of separate topics and starts being a subject that builds. Everything a student half-learned in grades 8 and 9 gets used again here, usually inside a longer question, and any gap that was survivable before becomes visible.

That is why this is the single best year to get help. A student who repairs their algebra in grade 10 walks into Pre-Calculus 11 able to spend their attention on new ideas. A student who does not tends to spend grade 11 fighting grade 9 material while new content keeps arriving. Families often tell us afterwards that grade 10 tutoring was the cheapest year of tutoring they ever paid for, because it prevented two harder years.

What the course covers

The mathematics here is foundational and stable. Students work on operations with powers and exponents, factoring polynomials, working with radicals, right-triangle trigonometry, and coordinate geometry — slope, distance, and the different ways of writing the equation of a line. Toward the end of the year the idea of a function usually appears formally: the notion that one quantity depends on another, that it can be represented as a table, graph, or equation, and that those representations describe the same thing.

There is also a practical strand around measurement, unit conversion, surface area and volume, and interpreting problems drawn from real situations. It looks easier than the algebra, and it is where careless marks are lost most often.

Where students commonly get stuck

Factoring is the headline difficulty. It is the first skill in school math that genuinely requires pattern recognition rather than following a procedure, and students who have coped by memorising steps hit a wall. It also cannot be avoided later, which is why we treat it as a priority rather than one unit among many.

Exponent laws are the second. Students learn each rule in isolation, then meet an expression that needs three of them plus a negative exponent, and the rules blur together. Negative and fractional exponents in particular tend to be applied by guesswork.

Linear relations are the third — not the calculations, which most students manage, but the meaning. Being asked what a slope represents in context, or to build an equation from a described situation, is a different task from finding slope between two points. Trigonometry adds its own confusion, because choosing between sine, cosine, and tangent depends on reading a diagram accurately, and many students choose the wrong ratio rather than compute wrongly.

How sessions are structured for this course

Grade 10 sessions are heavy on diagnosis at the start. We work through problems out loud with the student so we can hear where their reasoning stops, which is far more informative than a marked test. Almost always the fix lives one or two years earlier than the current unit.

After that, sessions balance repair with the class schedule: enough back-filling that the mechanics become automatic, enough current material that homework and quizzes stay manageable. We also spend time on the unglamorous parts — showing work clearly, checking answers, and reading questions carefully — because in grade 10 a large share of lost marks are not conceptual at all.
